Roel de Haan : Here we have the debut full-length ‘Futility Report’ by the Ukrainian group White Ward. White Ward plays post-black metal with an avant-garde approach. The foundations from which they operate is post-black metal in the vein of Agrypnie or Anomalie, but they add their own touch in the form of extensive and stylish use of saxophone and subdued jazzy parts. White Ward cleverly incorporates both worlds into elaborate and emotional songs. Their greatest achievement is that the use of saxophone is actually used within the post-black metal frame and not just as interludes or side-steps. It forms an integral part of their music and this is no mean feat. Besides, the song contain bucket-loads of atmosphere, emotion and variation. Tailor-made for the more adventurous post-black metal fan, ‘Futitity Report’ is one of the most mature as well as promising debut albums I heard in a long while.
