Lykle : Hard Folk. This is the term that French power duo Bottle Next have chosen to label its music. Only armed with drums, electro-acoustic guitar and saxophone, the band managed to create a fine debut album, called 'Bad Horses'. Honestly, I don’t really hear much folk in the band’s overall sound, so I’d rather speak of jazzy rock with powerful acoustic guitars. With this, Bottle Next has created a unique sound that swings, rocks and is musically gifted enough to remind me of Frank Zappa on occasion. Next to that, there are some minor references to Queens of the Stone Age and The White Stripes.
For purist metalheads, this is obviously nothing to be considered listening to, but for openminded rockers 'Bad Horses' can be a pleasant experience. The joy of making music is clearly showing off from Bottle Next and they definitely deserve a chance to heard.
