Berto : Jotnar is a melodic death metal band from Spain, from the Canary Islands to be precise. With ‘Connected / Condemned' they deliver their debut album, after first releasing an EP called 'Giant' a few years ago. It is an album that is easy to listen to, through the excellent mix of melody, groove and a good variety of harsh and clean vocals. Those clean vocals are somewhat similar to that bloke from Volbeat, though it is somewhat less convincing here. A lot of melodic guitar work, galloping rhythms and heavy riffs, it's a very modern album that sounds commercial enough to score big on the upcoming summer festivals. And yes, there we have him again, Bjorn "Speed" Strid from Soilwork delivering a guest appearance on ‘Broken Esteem’ and with the mix by Jens Bogren the Scandinavian picture is complete, were it not for the fact that the band comes from Spain. There lies the problem with this album, because it certainly does not have its own identity and therefore may tend to blend into the masses of good-sounding releases in this genre. But I give them a good chance.
