Dodecahedron - Kwintessens

Label : Season Of Mist | Archive under black metal

Release type: Full-length CD

Roel de Haan : After quite a while the Dutch avantgarde black metallers of Dodecahedron return with a second full-length. ‘Kwintessens’ succeeds their self-titled debut, which was large received rather positively. Dodecahedron specialises in technical, dissonant and utterly complex black metal. Frantic, chaotic and almost impossible to comprehend. Still relying on the foundations laid by Deathspell Omega and Mayhem, on ‘Kwintessens’ we see Dodecahedron extrapolating the vitriolic, dissonance and rhythmic wizardry to insane level. This is so complex this requires giant amounts of time to even begin understanding the intentions of the band. At times the complexity it feels too deliberate, which could be a turn-off for some. With time the album does seem to develop and a completely twisted atmosphere and vision becomes apparent, which elevates the album from being merely experimental to something one can get enjoyment from. Despite them being even less accessible than before, the quality Dodecahedron delivers is still top-notch. Abandon hope all ye who enter here…
