Vera : Klimt 1918 has been around since 1999 and at that very moment the band was founded by the Italian brothers Marco (vocals, guitars) and Paolo (drums) Soellner to put their love for The Cure, Bauhaus and Joy Division into own compositions. In all these years, they only released three albums, but the line-up has been pretty consistent: only two line-up changes occurred. It has been since 2008 that the predecessor ’Just In Case We’ll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation)’ was launched at the world, but on the other hand ‘Sentimentale Jugend’ happens to be a double album with almost two hours of music.

This time the refined Italians have found inspiration in Berlin in the seventies and eighties, when Bowie resided in the metropolis for inspiration and the book and movie ‘Christiane F – Kinder Von Bahnhof Zoo’ turned into a huge success. Another influence is the movie ‘The Lives Of Others’ to catch the wintery, foggy atmosphere of East Berlin at that time. Thus the music is really hazy and misty, with loads of fluttering sounds. Klimt 1918 still shows any affinity with new wave, indie and alternative rock, but nowadays they are mostly a possible favourite for the crowds that have a liking for postrock and shoegaze. Think of a cultivated version of Alcest on ‘Shelter’ and also of bands such as Mercury Rev and Starsailor. The vocals of Marco Soellner are a bit drawling and sleek; in the end it starts to be a bit monotonous. Just like the music: it is all beautiful and soaring, but the songs does not differ so much from each other, even though the band makes a prompt division between ‘Sentimentale’ and ‘Jugend’. On the first disc one can find the dreamy, slow and long compositions, on the second disc the tracks are shorter and faster. It must be a matter of details, since ‘Jugend’ also includes lengthy songs and except for ‘Juvenile’ (with pumping new wave bass) the pace seldom gets faster. It is beautiful, peaceful music to listen to with eyes closed, but you will wait in vain for proper tension or action. Even if – according to the band’s statement – they have used guitar effects and drum rhythms from the fifties and sixties for the first time.
