Roel de Haan : Sauron is a Polish pagan black metal outfit that has been active since the early nineties, albeit it not quite continuously. So now there is a new album by these rather unknown veterans called ‘Wara!’ Sauron plays a mid-tempo type of pagan/black with occasional but pronounced folk influences (mouth harp). The riffing is typical for the style, reminiscent of Drudkh, Furia, Khors and others. The songs are fairly simply constructed and repetition plays an important role in it. However, the tracks are also compact and slightly thrashy and in this situation repetition hardly an effectively tool to use. A severe lack of atmosphere would hurt any black metal album, but for a pagan black metal record this is disastrous. Sadly this is exactly the case for ‘Wara!’ Despite the individual riffs being well done, the composition of the music simply makes this album quite forgettable.
