Wim S. : More than eighteen months ago ‘Holding All The Roses’ was released, the previous Blackberry Smoke album. The rockers from the south of the United States did not know to impress me a lot with their music. But apparently a lot of things can change in eighteen months, either musically or in terms of a casual listener. I speak only for myself but this new album, ‘Like An Arrow', sounds very nice.
It's a pretty relaxing album. Very laidback, very American. More towards country than towards rock so to speak. Whether it is a conscious choice, I do not know, but it is clear that the band is at its best in the more tranquil songs. Most striking example is the amazing acoustic ballad ‘Running Through Times’: what a beautiful song! The pub song 'What Comes Naturally’ and the magical ‘Sunrise In Texas' also know to get you in an emotional state. Not to mention the contribution made by none other than Greg Allman in the closing track 'Free On The Wing' ... .goosebumps. The men with long hair and beards convincingly fill the gap that is not filled by Chris Robinson's Brotherhood. Fans know what to do.
