Wim S. : Exactly one year after the release of their previous album 'White Bird - Burn The Sky’ Palace Of The King from Australia now release the successor 'Valles Marineris'. I was pretty excited about that first release. But it didn’t bring the band l guess, because the new CD looks like home made one. Sad but true. Very unfortunate, because this band really has something that you all must hear.
Musically, nothing has changed. The band has remained true to their love of seventies music. Psychedelic blues rock, akin to masters such as Black Crowes and Wolfmother. The band even has added something to her style; just listen to the groove in the very fine 'Black Cloud'. That really swings man! The vocals of Tim Henwood are still very high (love him or hate him) and the guitar tandem Maden / Harrison is still intact. And on a roll! We hear plenty of tasty, swampy riffs and fine solos. As in the best Zeppelin tradition for example in the fantastic 'Empire Of The Sun', an absolute insane track. I think on this album the band has spent a little more care on writing the songs. The majority of the songs are just very well constructed. Compositions with a head and a tail. I hope this band gets the chance to let everyone hear what they can do, because they deserve it. Fine album.
