Sicktus : Onirik are an Italian quartet (quintet, by now) who are part of the blooming and booming Italian brutal death scene. 'Ab Initio' their debut, after a demo and having contributed to a split. Although the Italian brutal death scene may be in full bloom (with acts such as Fleshgod Apocalypse and Hour Of Penance doing quite alright), the quality of the releases coming from that scene can be, in all fairness, rather unstable. Onirik are in the category of bands that are doing okay, but who don't absolutely kill. 'Ab Initio' is an okay album, but it doesn't completely convince me, nor does it manage to wow me. The fact of the matter is that the tracks never really manage to soar above 'average': the band keep coloring between the established lines of the genre, the keys that should give the songs an epic push are to predictable and the same goes for the vocal patterns. The execution is alright, technically sound and tight, but the compositions could be a bit more exciting. If you can't get enough Suffocation and Morbid Angel out of those band's own discographies, you might want to give this one a go. I'll stick to the real stuff, though.
