Roel de Haan : Here we have the latest EP ‘Ego’ by the German act Angur. Angur plays a certain hybrid between black metal and pagan/folk metal. Their black metal output is raw, epic, varied and very similar in style as their compatriots Helrunar. I wish they would stop there, because the folk elements they employ are the definite let-down on the record. It may be unusual to have a hurdy gurdy (which sounds like a mix of bagpipes and violin), but the melodies played on it are quite cheesy. It certainly doesn’t result in the mature pagan/black metal album devoid of clichés they aimed for. For me, the epic structures, majectic riffing and pummeling aggression are all instantly ruined when the hurdy gurdy rears its ugly head. Too bad as Angur clearly are a talented bunch.
