Roel de Haan : Himinbjorg is a French act that has been around for ages, releasing albums regularly, but never reached beyond the realm of the underground. Their releases have been consistently decent in quality. The same goes for their latest ‘Wyrd’. Himinbjorg plays pagan black metal with an epic touch. Tight, powerfully produced and with decent song-writing, ‘Wyrd’ has a lot going for it. Reminiscent of Immortal (vocals!), Ancient and compatriots Belenos, Himinbjorg sounds familiar, but not redundant. For me however, the use of traditional instruments and particularly bag-pipes and flute are really detrimental to the overall quality. It instantly makes it corny and almost ridiculous and conflicts with the overall raw riffing and atmosphere. If you can handle a hefty dose of “Braveheart” in your pagan black metal ‘Wyrd’ is the thing for you, others may want to try it for size first.
