Patrick : Over five years ago, Solution .45 released the beautiful 'For Aeons Past'. The album was critically acclaimed, but it took a while before new music surfaced. Although the first outlines of a new album had already been recorded on a demo early 2013, recordings for the new album began by various circumstances was only in September 2014. Multiple deaths among relatives and friends provided more delay. The band continued to write tracks, and it soon became clear to both band and record company that the creative process had produced a large amount of impressive tracks. So many, that the idea of a double album, though released as two separate releases, was born.
'Nightmares In The Waking State - Part 1’ remains loyal to the sound of ‘For Aeons Past’, but is at the same time so much more than just a clone of the previous album. Raw riffs, melody, beautiful melancholic and epic passages, very catchy choruses and progressive, intriguing song structures still determine the musical landscape. The enchanting vocals of Christian Älvestam - with its typical alternation between clean vocals and inexorable death grunts - may not remain unmentioned. Though they are just a little less prominent this time. At 'For Aeons Past' the vocals were rather dominant in the mix, but this time they get less emphasis and it changes the balance between instruments and vocals for the good. It ensures that the band is displayed as a unity now. Furthermore, the riffs are darker, which makes for a more aggressive sound without this being at the expense of melody and accessibility. Songs such as the catchy ‘Bleed Heavens Dry’, the delicate ‘In Moments Of Despair’, the imminent 'Second To None', the downright beautiful ‘Winning Where Losing Is All’ or the very atmospheric, somewhat sinister closer' I, Nemesis' are all a delight.
If you like melodic death metal, you are in for a treat with 'Nightmares In The Waking State - Part 1' by Solution .45. And then to think that there is a part two to come in the (near) future.
