Vera : The Ward was founded early 2009 in Tiraspol, Moldavia and plays death/doom metal, yet it sounds pretty different than expected. This is really underground stuff with songs that lack any sort of coherency. The five-piece obviously go for a quite technical approach, with lots of twists and turns and exercises in finger-blastering speed, but it ends up in a patchwork of sounds. The songs are regaled with thick layers of keyboards, sometimes with an eerie, dramatic tinge. Fleshgod Apocalypse might be a band they admire, but they still have a long way to go. The sonorous, clear guitar sound is based on Swedish steel and vocalist Disembowel has a low-ranged, mediocre and monotonous growl. The production is so-so, which can mainly be noticed in the drum sound. In a lengthy track as the title track one can hear any doom influences and twice a very melodic guitar solo pops up out of nowhere in the midst of their relentless brutality. We like a proper amount of death metal, but we cannot ignore a number of flaws here. In ‘Flakes Of Rapture’ we hear female lead vocals. Obviously a searching band.
