Roel de Haan : Perihelion is a Hungarian post (black) metal band and this ‘Zeng’ is their second full-length album to date. Perihelion combines post rock sensibilities with an accessible black metal foundation and folk atmospheres. Using clean vocals rather than screams and toning down the raw metallic output for the most part, ‘Zeng’ is often quite catchy almost to the point of being poppy. Perihelion often does have aggressive outbursts in between shoegazing guitars and uplifting vocal lines, which betrays their black roots, but I must say I prefer their more introvert parts on this ‘Zeng’ although the contrasts often work well. Perihelion has an interesting take on post metal and the combination with slight folk elements and the occasional epic moment makes ‘Zeng’ worthy to check out by fans of Alcest, Lantlôs or even Solefald and Drudkh.
