Job : Till Lindemann, the man with the golden voice that has provided Rammstein with the typical basso vocals since its inception in 1989 appears to want to stray from the beaten path of German lyrics. In a relatively strange collaboration with Peter Tägtren (who the metal world knows as the songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for Hypocrisy), Lindemann is here to release ‘Skills in Pills’ featuring English lyrics. I’m immediately going to state the obvious: Lindemann’s sound is practically what Rammstein did on ‘Reise, Reise’ in 2004, only with a focus on keyboards every now and then. This is by no means a bad sounding style at all, but it appears this is just Till’s attempt at English lyrics instead of a completely new concept.
The music may have more of an edge at times and gets a bit more industrial on a few songs, but the lyrics are stereotypically ‘shocking’ again, with references to “fucking fat women from behind” and loving abortions. Till sings fine on this album, despite recent rumors of him losing his voice in Rammstein over the years, but he doesn’t do anything else than he has done in Rammstein for the better part of three decades. It’s a shame; this would have been the ultimate way to shapeshift into a more interesting sounding musician, and Peter Tägtren could have played a major role in that transformation. Instead of that, we get a roughened up Rammstein with English lyrics that add nothing to the formula.
