Remco Post : My only instrumental cd review this month is from the Australian guitarist Jimmy Lardner Brown.
Jimmy is the lead guitarist of the thrash/death metal band Killrazer and also he has worked with big names such as Tim 'Ripper' Owens (Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen, Iced Earth), Paul Di'Anno and Blaze Bayley (Iron Maiden). He has also shared the stage with none other than Steve Vai and Jimmy also writes columns and makes tutorial videos for Australian magazines. This is his first instrumental solo album that varies from soft ballads to brutal thrash. Some tracks are beautifully subtle and other times it is shredding to the max. This variety is certainly good, but sporadically the raw display of technique gets the upper hand above the listening pleasure. The most striking is the song with the title 'Waltz In C Sharp Minor, Op. 64, no. 2' (Chopin) and of course the comparison with Malmsteen here is easy. ‘Amelioration’ is simply a good album that certainly will appeal to the fans of technically very good guitarists, but is too generic to grow into a classic in a musical niche that has seen it all already.
