Pim B. : The demo ’MMXIII’ by Ireland’s Malthusian already impressed. These guys now return with a three track EP that will be releases on CD, vinyl and cassette. The band was formed in 2012 and consists of members that are or have been active in bands such as Mourning Beloveth, Wreck Of The Hesperus, Abaddon Incarnate, Altar Of Plagues, Sodb and On Pain Of Death.
‘Below The Hengiform’ turned out to be a great disc. Concerning their style I would compare this to bands like Necros Christos or Grave Miasma. So death metal with doom and black metal influences. Still Malthusian managed to create an own style and there are only a few similarities to the bands mentioned. One thing I noticed is that the music has quite a few layers. The songs have depth, which makes it all more interesting to listen to. Here and there the riffs remind of bands like Immolation or Incantation but the execution is a bit more despondent and therefore the link to black metal becomes noticeable. The double vocals with deep grunts and a screamed style complement each other perfectly. Combined with the music they create a dark, oppressive vibe that fits this style perfectly. I also have to mention the drums as those are fantastic too. ‘Below The Hengiform’ is an EP you have to hear.
