Cor : ‘Musical Colors’ is a project by Mario Contarino, who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at five years of age. This project has been realized with the help of Cubase software, computers and guest musicians. His love for music made Mario create music with computers and other devices before, in which he participated as a drummer (!). With this latest release Mario has still been the man in charge and composer, but all instruments are contributed by guest musicians.
The final result sure deserves respect; the music is cunningly arranged, and the guest performances are very well performed. It’s melodic, pretty technical and mostly instrumental. When the first albums of for example Joe Satriani and Vinnie Moore came out, even I was very much into this stuff, but after a while I started to miss some kind of soul in this scale racing. Also the fact that I personally developed an opinion that the addition of computers get in the way of expressing emotions in music, will probably not have helped. I can’t help getting the impression of artificiality and a comparison to rock versions of background music suitable for supermarkets. A typical case of encountering a reviewer who cannot appreciate the music to the fullest due to a matter of taste. Still, also I have loads of appreciation for the perseverance and musicianship of the maker(s).
