Pim B. : After the release of the compilation album ’Effigies Of Desolation’ through Cyclone Empire, Ophis’ third album is also being released by this label. The previous album was released by Solitude Productions. Without doubt I can tell ‘Abhorrence In Opulence’ is the best album by this band from Hamburg yet. The heavy doom/death comes in five long songs that contain enough variation to prevent boredom. The band’s music is based on heavy riffs, but here and there clever melodies surface. The result is a desolate sounding album. And as far as I’m concerned Ophis hits the nail right on the head. This is a great doom/death album. The production is fine to and really adds to the atmosphere of the album. I’m particularly pleased with the sound of the drums that fit in on the overall sound of the album perfectly. There’s also a bigger role for drummer Nils with his backing vocals. His screeches accompany singer/guitarist Phil’s deep grunts in a splendid way. To me this is amongst the best a German death/doom band has ever released.
