Roel de Haan : ‘No Stars, Only Full Dark’ is Windbruch’s second full-length album and the follow-up to ‘Collision Of The Worlds’, which was an interesting album full of astral atmospheric black metal. The album was seriously hampered by its vocals, which were poorly done and distracting from the atmosphere. On ‘No Stars, Only Full Dark’ the vocals are sparsely used and vastly improved, no longer a distracting factor. Windbruch now opts for a more straight-forward and dynamic song-writing approach. The songs get to the point much faster and are more energetic, while still retaining heaps of atmosphere. Melancholy, slightly depressed and nostalgic. Musically, post-black metal has been of influence, most notably by the German contingent of bands. Maybe less experimental than before, but more mature and interesting. ‘No Stars, Only Full Dark’ is a very enjoyable and at times quite original atmospheric black metal album.
