Roel de Haan : Mur is a French post-hardcore formation and this ‘Mur’ is their debut mini album. They are a slightly weird bunch as song titles like ‘Hugo Suits’ and ‘I’d Rather Have You Dead Than Pregnant’ are proof of. Aggressive, bewildering, chaotic and avant-gardistic, Mur violently races through the tracks like there is no tomorrow. Sometimes reminding me of Celeste with their vitriolic stance, but Mur also incorporates brooding and technical parts alongside occasional electronics. Sometimes, even Meshuggah springs to mind although not even close in terms of complexity. ‘Mur’ is a draining affair, one feels rather tired after its ending. Probably their intention and it is clear that Mur is a talented outfit, but their chosen style is hard to get into and endure even for the veterans of extreme or avant-garde music. Nevertheless, I have the distinct feeling that we haven’t seen the last of this band.
