Maleficent Vigor - Novus Ordo Seclorum

Label : Twin Peak Records | Archive under death metal / grindcore

Release type: Full-length CD

Johan Z. : Maleficent Vigor is from California in the United States, they already released ‘Novus Ordo Seclorum’ locally in 2012 en now it has been released worldwide. They perform what they call blackened melodic death and that is just fitting for it. In terms of drums there is a solid death metal base and at times it reminds me strongly of the style Dimmu Borgir performed when they still had Nick Barker behind the drums. The vocals would also fit perfectly on a death metal album. Where does the “blackened” part come in then? Well, the ambiance, the melodic pieces between all the hacking, the theme and the song structures. That is largely influenced by black metal. And they managed to blend it very well. The ambiance is dark and aggressive, the performance very tight. And even the production which does sound a bit dated fits in brilliantly. Excellent debut from these fellows.
