Pim B. : Zealotry hails from Boston and has been active since 2005. Yet this album is my first acquaintance with the band. I’m not familiar with their 2009 demo and 2012 single.
Maybe Zealotry is the biggest surprise I got to review this month. The band plays a form of death metal that asks for your total concentration. The songs are technical contain many layers. Fortunately Zealotry isn’t a monster that deals in speed combined with technical skills. Those bands to me are kitsch and Zealotry can be put in the category art. An important comparison for Zealotry is Immolation. The vocal style is reminiscent to Ross Dolan and within the compositions you hear plenty of Immolation as well. Yet you can’t say Zealotry are copycats as they gave their own twist to the music. That’s what makes this an interesting act. Do you like death metal that sounds heavy, that is thought through and of which you know that after ten spins you will still discover new aspects? Then you should give ‘The Charnel Expanse’ a chance.
