Roel de Haan : Fausttophel is a Ukrainian group and this ‘Thirst Of Oblivion’ is their musical effort to be discussed here. Fausttophel plays symphonic black metal with strong gothic and darkly romantic inclinations. Of immediate comparison with Dimmu Borgir and Cradle Of Filth are then easily made. And in this case they hold true as well. Musically they reside somewhat in the middle of these groups and Fausttophel is decent enough, but not nearly in the same league. Of course the obligatory female opera singing is featured sporadically and is as underwhelming as it is in most cases. Fausttophel just doesn’t deliver enough complexity and own insights on this ‘Thirst Of Oblivion’ and seems destined to the obscure parts of obscurity.
