Melanie : Within Temptation has experienced a significant change in the last couple of years. Not only did they changed course from ‘The Silent Force’ on, but also they waiting time between albums increased much. Family lives were number one. We recently got an album of pop songs, transformed into gothic metal. Now it’s time to see what they’ve been doing the last couple of months, and what they have in stall for us. The first demo to prepare us for the real thing!
Firstly, Tarja Turunen is a guest vocalist on this album. I think I can divide the gothic metal bats into two groups now: The ones who have been waiting for this their entire lives, and the ones that should have been waiting for this their entire lives. Should we have been waiting for this? Yes, you should absolutely have! ‘Paradise’ is a song that fits both Tarja Turunen and Within Temptation. It brings out the best in all musicians, and accentuates their right moments. It is a mix between gothic and pop; a style that they can pull off both. Within Temptation and Tarja have proved that on their last albums. In addition to ‘Paradise’, there are three other demos of new songs that we may enjoy. These numbers are a well balanced mix of gothic rock and pop, but Within Temptation has put its mark on these and that’s audible. ‘Silver Moonlight’ even takes us back to the old days, for it contains grunts! The only thing that is different and, I fear, will stay that way, is the angelic voice of Sharon, which has disappeared as snow in the sun.
All in all, this is a short but decent surprise of that what awaits us. It is never completely fair to judge a new album on just four tracks alone, but I think something wicked is coming this way. I think we have something good coming to us, something that we will appreciate much more than their last albums. I will be waiting.
