Vera : Greg Howe's first solo album was chosen as one of the two best records of the year by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. The virtuosity of this guitarist is beyond discussion. He works at his career as solo artist, session musician or as hired live musician. In the latter capacity one could see him on the side of Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson and Enrique Iglesias. As you see, this curriculum vitae is not that metal allied, but we are dealing with a jazz/rock fusion album here.
On 'Sound Proof' Greg is assisted by Jon Reshard on bass, Gianluca Palmieri on drums and David Cook on keyboards. It is an instrumental album, featuring finger-blistering caprioles on guitar. Aficionados of technical tour de forces or studious guitarists may be interested in this pulling out all the stops, but on many "guitar albums” technical skills are more important than songs and that is a pity. The way Howe plays is quite melodic from time to time, but generally the whole thing has a kind of nervous agitation that does not please me. The album includes nine songs and five bonus track. I fail to see the reason of this presentation, since even the title track turns into a bonus track then. Anyway, the insiders will surely listen with growing admiration to the ingenious skills of Greg.
