For many of our readers Gyze will be an unknown band. Can you tell me something about who you are? Please take the time to introduce your band a little bit.
In May 2009 Suicide Heaven was formed in Sapporo by Ryoji, Shuji and Shogo. The distinguishing characteristics of Suicide Heaven consisted of the twin vocals of Ryoji and Shogo, the thrilling fast paced drum of Shuji and the lyrical guitar melodies of Ryoji colouring the whole music. Performing with many talented artists, Suicide Heaven received special recognition and was given outstanding engagements, creating a new sensation in the extreme scene in Sapporo. In the same year Suicide Heaven moved its base from Sapporo to Tokyo and was renamed as Gyze. Gyze's long-awaited first full album ‘Fascinating Violence’ was released in June 2013 by the Italian label Coroner Records.
Congratulations on your album ‘Fascinating Violence’. It is an impressive disc that has received many positive reactions. To what extent is positive feedback important for you?
The positive feedback is very important for us and makes us happy. Getting my personality forward was the highest priority, I didn't consider about the sales while I created the album.
Who in Gyze is/are responsible for writing the music? How does writing the songs work within Gyze? Do you share your ideas and files online, after which you work on them at home or do you come together in a rehearsal room? Could you elaborate on that?
It is I, Ryoji. At first I write guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, music with a recording system of mine at home. Next I give tracks to Shuji and let him make more professional drum phrases. Till then, 80% is finished. We use a rehearsal room only before a live performance; we hardly use it while the creation of an album.
On the album Claudio Ravinale is doing the vocals on nine of the tracks. How did the collaboration with him come about? You yourself have two people in the band who can do the vocals. Why did you choose to add a guest vocalist? What is the added value that Claudio brings?
Mr. Ettore Rigotti, the producer of the album, suggested the idea to me. I was very excited when I heard it because I am a great fan of Claudio’s voice, probably other Japanese fans also like his voice like me. Honestly speaking, I am conscious that I’m more a guitarist than a vocalist, so it was not a problem having his voice on the album, and it was a good experience for my singing too.
Was the addition of Claudio a once in a lifetime thing or will we see him return on future albums as well?
I don't have any ideas yet, but if Claudio would sing on our next album it will be a pleasure. I wish Ettore Rigotti would sing some clean vocals choruses too. Of course I will do it mainly on stage.
What are some of the themes the lyrics are about? Is it comprised of individual tales? How is it tied to your personal lives? Are Ryoji and Shogo, with them being the vocalists, the ones who come up with the subjects and lyrics? Can Shuji contribute as well?
In the album more than half lyrics were written in Japanese. As for Gyze's way of writing lyrics; I almost write them, all, sometimes I tell only themes to Shogo and he writes lyrics. Also Shuji is an artist with the talent of writing both lyrics and song. Themes are from personal lives. Probably there are no fictitious themes so far.
I was told, and correct me if I’m wrong, that originally quite some songs were in Japanese. Is that true and if so, why were the lyrics translated into English?
The reason is we cannot speak a perfect English. Though we think using Japanese words is part of Gyze’s personality, in the next album I would like to create music to impress more people in the world by increasing songs written in English.
How did you, a Japanese band, managed to get signed by an Italian record company?
One of the Record companies I sent our demo was Coroner Records. When Coroner Records listened to the demo and proposed us a contract I was very pleased because I’m a fan of Disarmonia Mundi, and I really love Ettore’s sound as producer.
Thank you for taking the time to go through all these questions! The last words are yours…
Thank you very much to Lords Of Metal and all your readers, we hope a lot of people like and enjoy our music.
